15 years ago, at the age of eight, Maaike started windsurfing. Particularly freestyle surfing impressed her a lot. Her talent in this discipline quickly became apparent and after only five years she was ready to compete in her first World Cup. The people she met at competitions inspired Maaike and the atmosphere motivated her to keep going. It paid off and she became vice world champion in freestyle in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Alongside this, Maaike has also started wavesurfing and wing. "The wave adds a totally new dimension," she says of her new challenge.
